WoW Forever is giving professions one of their biggest updates yet, with more than 600 new recipes coming to Azeroth. The update goes beyond simply adding more items. Blizzard is expanding professions across the leveling experience, reworking existing recipes, adding profession-related systems, and connecting crafting more closely with exploration and the player economy.
For the full overview of everything coming to the game, read our WoW Forever: The Complete Classic Plus Guide.
Professions have always been an important part of Classic WoW. Alchemy supplied raid consumables, Engineering offered unique combat utility, Blacksmithing created weapons and armor, while Tailoring and Leatherworking produced some of the most desirable crafted gear. Gathering professions, meanwhile, supported the entire economy.
WoW Forever builds on that foundation with 600+ new recipes across professions and level ranges. Many existing recipes are also being changed, meaning the profession system is expanding rather than simply receiving a new endgame tier.
What We Know About the 600+ New Recipes
Blizzard has confirmed that more than 600 new recipes are being added across the game's professions and level ranges, with existing recipes also receiving updates.
The complete recipe list is not yet available, but the changes already revealed show that professions are being integrated into more parts of the game. New recipes include equipment and consumables, while some profession-related rewards are tied directly to exploration and dungeon content.
One particularly interesting addition is the introduction of advanced Blueprint recipes from dungeon bosses. This creates another connection between crafting and PvE, giving players a reason to look for profession-related rewards while running group content.
Cooking Gets a Bigger Role in Leveling
Cooking has traditionally been useful for temporary stat buffs, but WoW Forever gives it an additional purpose during the leveling journey.
New food can provide a 5% bonus to experience gained from kills while retaining its existing stat benefits. That gives players a practical reason to keep food buffs active while leveling rather than treating Cooking as an optional side profession.
Fishing naturally benefits from this change as well, since fish can supply ingredients for Cooking. Together, the two professions become more relevant to players who want to support their own leveling and food supply.
Blacksmithing: Weapons, Armor, and Utility
Blacksmithing has always been one of the defining crafting professions in Classic. It produces Mail and Plate armor, weapons, sharpening stones, and other useful items, with specialized Weaponsmith and Armorsmith paths adding further variety.
WoW Forever adds new recipes throughout the leveling experience. Examples shown so far include Crusader's Boots, Officer's Pauldrons, and Enriched Thorium Breastplate.
Blacksmithing also interacts with the new Camping system. Blacksmiths can provide a sharpening wheel at campsites, giving other players an additional reason to seek out profession specialists.
Alchemy: Consumables and Preparation
Alchemy has a very different role. Rather than producing conventional equipment, it focuses on potions, elixirs, flasks, and transmutations.
That made Alchemy particularly important in Vanilla for players preparing for raids, dungeons, and PvP. Its natural partner, Herbalism, provides many of the materials needed for crafting.
WoW Forever is adding more Alchemy recipes, although the complete list has not yet been revealed. New consumables could have a significant effect on both character optimization and the value of herbs in the economy.
Engineering: Classic Utility With More Possibilities
Engineering has always stood apart from the other crafting professions. Its appeal comes from gadgets, explosives, scopes, trinkets, and other unusual items rather than conventional armor production.
That made it especially popular among players interested in PvP and high-end PvE, where Engineering's unique utility could be more valuable than simply producing another piece of gear.
The full list of new Forever Engineering recipes is still being revealed, but the profession's traditional identity remains the same: gadgets, utility, and unconventional tools.
Leatherworking: A History of Powerful Crafted Gear
Leatherworking has a particularly strong history of producing desirable endgame equipment. Vanilla examples include the Devilsaur Set and Hide of the Wild, with some crafted pieces becoming part of Best in Slot setups for particular classes and roles.
The profession can also specialize into Tribal, Dragonscale, or Elemental Leatherworking, giving players different crafting paths.
WoW Forever's expanded recipe pool gives Leatherworking another opportunity to provide competitive gear while also making the profession more relevant throughout the leveling process.
Tailoring: Cloth Gear and Enchanting Synergy
Tailoring is the natural crafting profession for cloth wearers, producing armor, bags, and other cloth-based items. Unlike most crafting professions, it does not require a dedicated gathering profession because cloth comes directly from humanoid enemies.
Vanilla Tailoring also produced several highly desirable caster items, while its natural pairing with Enchanting allowed players to create items and disenchant them for materials.
WoW Forever expands the recipe pool for Tailoring, giving cloth users more opportunities to craft useful equipment and giving Enchanters another source of materials.
Enchanting: Improving the Gear You Already Have
Enchanting differs from most professions because its primary purpose is to enhance existing equipment. Enchanters apply permanent bonuses to eligible weapons and armor while also supplying enchanting materials to other players.
Disenchanting unwanted equipment creates its own economy, making Enchanting particularly useful alongside Tailoring. With hundreds of new recipes entering the game, the profession will gain additional opportunities to provide upgrades and services.
Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning
The gathering professions remain the foundation of the crafting economy.
- Herbalism supplies materials for Alchemy and other recipes.
- Mining provides ore and metals for Blacksmithing and Engineering.
- Skinning supplies leather and hides for Leatherworking.
Classic players have traditionally paired these professions with their corresponding crafting professions, such as Herbalism + Alchemy, Mining + Blacksmithing, Mining + Engineering, and Skinning + Leatherworking.
With hundreds of additional recipes, demand for raw materials could become even more important, particularly if new recipes require materials from the new zones or higher-level content.
First Aid and Fishing
The secondary professions still have useful roles as well. First Aid provides bandages and emergency healing, while Fishing supplies ingredients for Cooking and other recipes.
Fishing becomes especially relevant alongside WoW Forever's updated Cooking system, giving players another reason to spend time gathering their own ingredients.
Which Professions Historically Produced BiS Gear?
Not every profession is designed around Best in Slot equipment. In Vanilla, Tailoring, Leatherworking, and Blacksmithing were the main sources of crafted armor and weapons, and each produced items that could be highly competitive or Best in Slot for certain classes and situations.
Leatherworking's Devilsaur Set is one of the most recognizable examples, while Tailoring produced important caster gear and Blacksmithing could create powerful weapons and armor.
However, profession value was never determined entirely by BiS gear. Alchemy was important because of consumables, while Engineering's unique utility could make it extremely valuable despite producing relatively little conventional gear.
That distinction matters even more in WoW Forever. New recipes, items, talents, class combinations, and progression systems mean that the old Vanilla profession meta cannot simply be copied into the new game.
How Professions Could Affect the Economy
More than 600 new recipes naturally create more demand for materials and more potential markets for crafted goods.
Rare recipes could become particularly valuable if they produce desirable gear, consumables, or utility items. At the same time, new materials from expanded zones and content could create fresh opportunities for gatherers.
The addition of dungeon-sourced Blueprints makes this even more interesting. Some of the most desirable crafting recipes may require players to participate in content outside their profession itself, linking dungeons, crafting, and the economy together.
For players who enjoy making gold, this could make learning which recipes are valuable and where their materials come from just as important as leveling the profession itself.
Professions and Exploration
WoW Forever's profession changes also fit into its broader emphasis on exploration.
New zones, materials, recipes, NPCs, dungeons, and profession discoveries give players more reasons to travel through Azeroth. Instead of reaching level 60 and leaving most of the world behind, players can continue returning to different areas for resources, recipes, and crafting opportunities.
The new Camping system reinforces this idea by giving professions a visible role in outdoor player interaction. Players can contribute profession objects to camps and provide useful benefits to other adventurers.
What We Still Don't Know
The 600+ figure is confirmed, but the complete recipe database is not yet available. The exact distribution between professions, skill levels, materials, recipe sources, and final item values is still subject to beta testing.
Players should therefore be careful with early profession rankings and Best in Slot lists. The final value of a profession will depend on the finished recipe pool, itemization, class changes, and the actual economy after launch.
How Should You Choose a Profession?
The traditional pairings remain a useful starting point:
- Herbalism + Alchemy: Gather herbs and create consumables.
- Mining + Blacksmithing: Gather ore for weapons and armor.
- Mining + Engineering: Supply the materials needed for gadgets and explosives.
- Skinning + Leatherworking: Turn gathered leather into armor and other crafted items.
- Tailoring + Enchanting: Use cloth to create items that can be disenchanted into enchanting materials.
Players focused on competitive progression may ultimately choose differently depending on the final profession bonuses and new recipes. For everyone else, the best combination may simply be the one that matches how they prefer to play: crafting gear, producing consumables, gathering materials, making gold, or providing utility to other players.
Why the Profession Update Matters
The significance of the 600+ recipes is not just the number itself. WoW Forever is making professions more relevant across the entire game.
New recipes appear across the leveling range, existing recipes are being updated, Cooking can contribute to leveling, Camping gives professions an outdoor social role, and dungeon Blueprints connect crafting with group content.
That is particularly important for a game built around a permanent level 60 cap. With no new level bracket replacing the old one, systems such as professions can continue providing reasons to explore, gather, craft, trade, and improve your character.
WoW Forever Professions: What to Expect
Vanilla WoW established professions as an important part of the game's economy and character progression. WoW Forever is expanding that system without abandoning its Classic foundation.
With 600+ new recipes, updated existing recipes, new Cooking benefits, Camping interactions, dungeon Blueprints, and a larger role for crafting throughout the world, professions are set to become a much deeper part of the experience.
The final profession meta will only become clear once the full recipe pool is tested during beta and after launch. For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: the old Vanilla profession choices are a starting point, not necessarily the answer for WoW Forever.

How Should You Choose a Profession?
The best profession combination depends heavily on what you want to get out of your character. The 600+ new recipes mean there is more room for specialization, but the traditional strengths of each profession still provide a useful starting point.
For Raiding and PvE Progression
If your priority is maximizing your performance in dungeons and raids, Alchemy and Engineering are two of the professions worth looking at first.
Alchemy is built around potions, elixirs, flasks, and other consumables that can support long-term PvE progression. Its value is especially relevant for players who expect to raid regularly and want a reliable supply of consumables.
Engineering takes a different approach, providing combat utility through gadgets, explosives, and other specialized items. Its historical strength in high-end PvE comes from utility rather than conventional crafted gear.
If you want to combine self-sufficiency with your crafting profession, Herbalism + Alchemy is a natural choice, while Mining + Engineering gives Engineers their own source of materials.
For PvP and Combat Utility
Players primarily interested in PvP should pay particular attention to Engineering. Classic Engineering has long been associated with PvP because of its unique gadgets, explosives, and utility items, and WoW Forever's expanded recipe pool could give the profession even more tools.
Alchemy can complement this playstyle through consumables, while Enchanting can provide permanent equipment upgrades.
For Crafted Gear and Best in Slot Hunting
If your main goal is producing powerful equipment, look toward Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, and Tailoring.
Blacksmithing is the natural choice for players interested in weapons and Plate or Mail equipment. Leatherworking has a particularly strong Vanilla history of producing desirable gear, including the famous Devilsaur Set. Tailoring is similarly important for cloth wearers and has historically produced powerful caster items.
However, it is too early to declare which Forever profession will produce the most Best in Slot gear. The new recipe pool and itemization are different from Vanilla, and the final profession meta will depend on the finished game.
For Making Gold
Players focused primarily on the economy have two broad approaches.
Gathering professions such as Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning provide a straightforward way to collect materials and sell them to other players. They can be particularly attractive early in a new economy when demand for crafting materials is high.
Alternatively, crafting professions can become extremely profitable when they provide desirable consumables, equipment, or rare recipes. Alchemy, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring, and Blacksmithing could all benefit from valuable recipes, but the actual market will depend on player demand and the final recipe distribution.
For Leveling and Solo Play
If your priority is getting through the level 1 to 60 journey efficiently, Cooking deserves more attention than it traditionally received.
WoW Forever's updated food can provide a 5% bonus to experience gained from kills while retaining its existing stat benefits. Keeping food available throughout the leveling process can therefore provide a practical advantage.
Fishing + Cooking is the obvious self-sufficient combination for this approach, while gathering professions can also help you collect materials without relying on the Auction House.
For Self-Sufficiency
If you would rather produce your own materials and consumables instead of depending on the Auction House, the classic gathering and crafting pairings remain useful:
- Herbalism + Alchemy: Gather your own herbs and turn them into consumables.
- Mining + Blacksmithing: Gather ore for your own weapons and armor.
- Mining + Engineering: Supply the materials needed for gadgets and explosives.
- Skinning + Leatherworking: Turn gathered leather directly into crafted gear.
- Tailoring + Enchanting: Create cloth items and disenchant them for enchanting materials.
- Fishing + Cooking: Catch your own ingredients and prepare your own food.
For Collectors and Completionists
Players who enjoy discovering recipes rather than simply maximizing combat performance may want to prioritize professions with extensive recipe collections.
The addition of 600+ new recipes, along with recipes obtained through exploration and advanced Blueprints from dungeon bosses, gives completionists significantly more to collect. This is particularly interesting for players who enjoy exploring Azeroth and tracking down rare crafting recipes.
Quick Profession Guide by Goal
